Therapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is more than being organized, particular, or wanting things a certain way. It is a condition characterized by unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that create significant anxiety, often leading to repetitive behaviors or mental rituals in an attempt to find relief or certainty.

OCD can feel like being caught in a cycle where your mind continuously demands answers, reassurance, or action. Even when you recognize that a fear may be unlikely, the uncertainty can feel overwhelming. The more you try to gain certainty or prevent something bad from happening, the stronger the cycle often becomes. OCD can affect the way you think, feel, make decisions, and engage with daily life.

OCD Symptoms

  • Intrusive or unwanted thoughts, images, or urges.

  • Excessive doubt or difficulty tolerating uncertainty.

  • Repetitive behaviors or rituals.

  • Mental compulsions such as checking, reviewing, or reassurance-seeking.

  • Intense anxiety when unable to complete rituals.

  • Fear of making mistakes or causing harm.

  • Difficulty concentrating due to obsessive thoughts.

  • Significant distress or interference with daily functioning.

At its core, OCD is often the experience of a mind seeking certainty and safety in situations where certainty cannot be fully achieved. In an effort to reduce anxiety, the brain becomes stuck in a cycle of obsessions and compulsions that can feel difficult to break on your own.

In many ways, OCD is like being stuck in a loop of "what if" thoughts that never feel fully resolved. Even when you logically know something is unlikely or safe, your mind may continue to demand certainty, reassurance, or action. Everyday situations can become filled with doubt, causing you to repeatedly check, analyze, or seek relief from uncomfortable thoughts and feelings. At its core, OCD is often the mind's attempt to create safety and certainty in an uncertain world—relying on protective patterns that ultimately keep the cycle going.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Treatment Approaches

My approach to treating OCD is holistic, collaborative, and tailored to each individual's needs. I integrate Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Somatic Therapy, Polyvagal Theory, and Parts Work to help clients better understand and navigate the thoughts, emotions, and nervous system responses that often accompany OCD. Together, we explore intrusive thoughts, compulsive patterns, underlying fears, and the protective parts of self that may be working overtime to create a sense of certainty or safety. While learning to reduce compulsions and build tolerance for uncertainty, we also focus on developing greater nervous system regulation, self-awareness, and resilience. The goal is not simply to manage symptoms, but to help you break free from the cycle of obsessions and compulsions and cultivate a deeper sense of trust, flexibility, and confidence in yourself.
